Thinking of Purchasing a Puppy
Purchasing a Rhodesian Ridgeback
Consider the COVID-19 Situation
Ethical breeders have suspended or limited their breeding programs due to Covid-19.
There is an unprecedented amount of demand for puppies and less available than usual. Please keep this in consideration when looking for a breeder.
At Magombe, we understand that circumstances mean we might not be able to help you out when you're looking for the perfect puppy to join your family. To help you with your search, we've compiled a list of pointers and recommendations;
- Check out the breed club for your state. Not all ethical breeders are active members of their club but it's a great place to start.
- Check out the recommended breeders list on the Facebook group Rhodesian Ridgebacks Australia - only ANKC registered breeders are added to this list.
- Keep your eyes open and remember to make sure that any advert has to include the membership number of the breeder. If you see someone advertising a MBDA or ABR, etc, number they are NOT a registered breeder. Stay away! If a breeder offers to sell you a puppy cheaper with no papers, stay away! It most likely a scam and they are not registered breeders. All puppies in a litter need to be registered and transferred into the new owners names with paperwork provided, if this does not happen, you need to double check with dogsnsw.
- A breeder who is active in a recognised dog sport (show, lure course, obedience) is generally considered more acceptable as they are held accountable by their peers.
- Make sure that you get a written guarantee that the puppy is free from dermoid sinus. Under consumer law, any puppy sold has to be free of hereditary or congenital defects or full disclosure provided. In regards to dermoid sinus, we recommend that they be checked by at least 2 people, if your breeder doesn't know or seems unsure, stay away.
- Do not be forced into putting down a non-refundable deposit, this is against consumer law. A refundable deposit where part is withheld in case of change of mind is also unacceptable and unethical. If putting down a deposit make sure to get a written receipt that includes acknowledgement that it is fully refundable when requested for any reason.
- Check out the breed standard on the ANKC website, it is really informative about the temperament and appearance you should expect when purchasing a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy.
- Know your consumer rights! Get a written guarentee that your puppy is free from all hereditary or congenital defects. If your puppy has had issues the breeder needs to fully disclose them, their impacts, and potentially organise for a consultation with their vet to explain the issue. If you purchase a puppy and find out later on it has health issues that were present at birth or are 100% due to negligence when breeding you have rights and they are liable.
Below is an example of ANKC registration papers. As per the new dogsnsw rules and guidelines, when you purchase a puppy from Magombe, you will have your registration papers, with you as the registered owners, sent to you directly from dogsnsw within a reasonable period of time of purchasing your puppy.
